OpenSCAD Old English Fonts & 3D Text example
Practical parts
Lesson 18 of 23
Choose a blackletter font and turn flat text outlines into raised 3D lettering.
Try changing:
label_textfont_familytext_widthletter_heightbase_thicknessMedium compile complexity. Optional fonts load on the first compile. Detailed blackletter outlines take longer than plain primitives.
How this model works
text creates 2D outlines using a font's internal family name, not its filename. linear_extrude adds thickness, and a small overlap joins the letters to the base. Change font_family in Parameters to compare the two blackletter families with Lato. Both optional fonts are selected automatically for this lesson and downloaded only when compiling; inspect them under Files > Fonts. resize constrains the word's width and height, so long names are compressed rather than automatically typeset. Separate letters become one connected object through the plate. For desktop OpenSCAD, install the same fonts separately; project ZIPs record catalog selections but do not embed catalog font binaries.

Make it your own
Change label_text to your name and compare all three font families. Then engrave the lettering by subtracting it from the plate, leaving material beneath the letters.
Change one parameter at a time and inspect the result. Use the workspace reset action to return to this lesson’s original model.
